Implantation
Losing your teeth - getting your teeth back.

Even though our teeth are not visible at the start of our lives they are already there and during the course of life they have to do a lot of work which of course does leave traces. Tooth-losing affects people at every age: as a child during playing or sport activities or if one suffers caries or gum loss. Inadequate care and malnutrition can also damage the teeth. Those who lose teeth of course want good replacements thereof. These should be as natural as possible and should also reproduce the function of the dentition as best as possible. Implants afford an optimal solution in almost any individual situation.

An implant consists of commercially pure titanium what is an already proven and biologically compatible material in medical technology because it is tissue-friendly. Three components, namely the implant, the abutment and the holding screw are combined with one another. Assembled together the entire construction is about two centimeters long. Different sizes and forms ensure the best solution in every case.
Implants are amongst the most modern and scientifically well-founded inventions. The use of implants has been certified to be successful in more than 95 percent of all cases - it is attributed to its patented tube-in-tube connection which arguably ensures the best seating and an exact fitting. Because of its simple handling it makes the treatment shorter.
Under local anesthesia your doctor prepares an exactly fitting cavity for the root shaped screw (implant) in the jaw using a special drill (figure 1 and 2) before the screw (implant) is inserted (figure 3).
The bone stabilizes the implant and in approximately three to six months the bone and the implant coalesce. When the healing phase is over the dentist inserts the abutment into the implant, fits the crown and connects it firmly to the implant abutment (figure 4).

If you have lost a single tooth the resulting gap can be closed using an implant with an abutment. No healthy tooth is required next to the treated tooth for this process nor does it need to be prepared as a post support.

Implant restored with a crown |
An implant is often the more aesthetic solution than conventional restoration. In addition modern ceramic materials ensure a perfect look of natural teeth.
You are missing several teeth - see dental price
Smaller and larger gaps (edentulous spaces) can also be closed with implants. This way the implants serve as an abutment for your fixed restorations. As an alternative to these fixed bridge constructions is a supported implant. Removable prosthesis can be considered for larger gaps, for example when it is not possible to build up missing bone in all areas of your jaw. Such a removable reconstruction is much more stable during chewing than a traditional prosthesis.

A so-called free-end situation occurs when you miss several posterior teeth in the same row. Here the implant is the best and only solution for a fixed restoration. Without implants a removable partial denture is possible with all its disadvantages. Mechanical holding elements such as clasps must be attached otherwise they are aesthetically unpleasing and impair the comfort of wearing the denture.
All your teeth are missing - see dental price
Even if you have lost all your teeth you do not need to settle for a full denture. Even in this situation your dentist can offer you a solution with dental implants, a fixed or a removable reconstruction in the upper and lower jaw.

Many people who wear dentures complain about the bad seating of their prosthesis and about the pressure that causes pain on several points. Adhesives or mechanical aids do not solve such problems permanently and satisfactorily. Implants may help to create relief in this case. The comfort of wearing can considerably increase with the number of implants right up to an implant-borne prosthesis.
Healing takes time and energy
To make sure that the bone coalesces with the implant as quickly and naturally as possible, resting and patience are particularly important since every healing process takes time. The healing time depends on factors such as bone quality and quantity. Your doctor will inform you about the correct behavior during this healing phase. In the first days after the operation you particularly should avoid everything that might strain the implant site:
- Ensure that you practice gentle, but effective oral hygiene. This way you can prevent bacterial infections of tooth deposits that can risk the healing of your implant.
- Do not chew any hard food
- Refrain from smoking and alcohol as long as possible. They both hinder the healing process
- Avoid severe physical strains
Long life: thanks to optimal treatment and regular check-ups
An implant represents a valuable investment that can be of great benefits to you. With proper care you should be able to radiate a pleasant smile for your whole life. This has been confirmed in scientific studies. However, proper dental care is essential, if you intend to enjoy the many benefits of your new teeth for a long time.
At least two visits a year are recommended for optimal maintenance. Your dentist will inspect your implants. Also it is suggested to go to professional tooth cleaning at least once a year to remove persistent deposits.
Did you know?
More than 90 percent of all implants remain in a perfect condition even after ten years. Lifelong-lasting implants cost less than buying newspaper every day.
